When it comes to Turkish coffee, one cannot help but be transported to a world of rich history and time-honoured traditions. Originating in the Middle East, Turkish coffee has a deeply rooted cultural significance. Also, a brewing method that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The history of Turkish coffee can be traced back to the 16th century when the Ottoman Empire ruled over much of the eastern Mediterranean and the Arab world. Coffee quickly became a cherished beverage among the elite and was deemed a symbol of sophistication and hospitality. Turkish coffee houses, known as “Kahvehanes,” emerged as vibrant social hubs. People gathered here to engage in conversation, play games, and savour the aromatic brew.

Preparing and serving Turkish coffee is an art in itself. The coffee beans are finely ground to a powder-like consistency, akin to the texture of cocoa powder. A small copper pot called a “cezve” is used to brew the coffee. Water and sugar are added to the cezve along with the desired amount of coffee. The mixture is then slowly heated over a low flame. The slow heating process allows the flavours to mingle and creates a distinct froth known as “kaimak” that forms on top.

When serving Turkish coffee, the host carefully pours the coffee into tiny cups called “fincan.” Once the coffee is consumed, the person receiving the cup turns it upside down on the saucer and waits for the grounds to dry.

Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Coffee

Ethiopia, often referred to as the birthplace of coffee, holds a profound connection to this beloved beverage. Legend has it that Ethiopian shepherds discovered the energising effects of coffee over a thousand years ago, when they noticed their goats becoming lively after consuming coffee cherries. This discovery marked the beginning of a long-standing relationship between Ethiopia and coffee.

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a time-honoured tradition, is a truly immersive experience. It is a ceremonial affair where coffee beans are meticulously roasted, ground, and brewed in a clay pot called a “jebena.” The ceremony often takes place in a traditional Ethiopian home or a special coffee house. The woman of the house, known as the “jebena bet” or coffee maker, leads the ceremony.

During the ceremony, participants are encouraged to slow down, reflect, and engage in meaningful conversation. It is a cherished time for friends, family, and neighbours to come together, share stories, and cultivate a sense of community.

Japan: A Unique Coffee Culture

While tea has traditionally taken centre stage in Japanese culture. Coffee has carved out its own niche and grown in popularity over the years.

One notable aspect of Japan’s coffee culture is the rise of specialty coffee shops. Coffee lovers in Japan seek out these specialty shops, where passionate baristas passionately craft each cup. Thereby, ensuring every sip is a journey of flavours and textures.

Japanese coffee culture also embraces the concept of “third wave coffee,” which focuses on the appreciation of coffee as an artisanal product. This movement has led to the emergence of specialty coffee shops that not only highlight the flavours and origins of the beans. But also prioritise sustainable and ethical sourcing practices.

India: Exploring the Rich History

India has a long and colourful history when it comes to coffee, with its own unique and vibrant traditions surrounding this beloved beverage.

The history of coffee in India dates back to the 17th century when it was introduced by Baba Budan, a Sufi saint. He is said to have smuggled coffee beans from Yemen. These beans were planted in the hills of Chikmagalur, Karnataka, setting the stage for India’s coffee industry to flourish. Since then, coffee cultivation has spread to other regions of southern India such as Coorg, Wayanad, and Nilgiris, each with its own unique coffee-growing ecosystem.

Another unique tradition is the use of spices in coffee. In some parts of India, coffee is prepared with a hint of spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, or cloves, adding an extra depth of flavour and complexity. These spiced coffees, often referred to as “masala coffee,” are enjoyed as a comforting beverage with a delightful aroma.
